I went to Southside Bistro on two occasions last week, the first time was to farewell my dear girlfriend, Christy. She is heading to Macau for her career and family, and because the food was delicious, Larry and I went back for a casual brunch date.
Shop Fitout

Southside Bistro is tucked away behind Sunny Park Shopping Centre in Sunnybank. This cosy cafe has a rustic style fit-out, and there is a deck for larger groups and functions. While Sunnybank represents a large part of Asian cuisine in Brisbane, Southside Bistro has done a great job in carving her own niche with her creative Asian fusion menu, superb desserts and late opening hours.
I would describe her menu as redesigning everyday Asian household meals with a contemporary twist. Most of their menu items have a strong Chinese influence with a dash of Japanese and Korean flavours.
Food
I had this beautiful Duck Maryland with bulgogi potato salad, mescaline & sweet chilli salad, fried onion and oolong tea egg. The duck skin was incredibly crispy, but it would be even better if the meat has a bit more moisture in it. It could be hard to find the balance between crispiness on the outside while retaining the moist inside. The oolong tea egg was full of oolong tea flavour. I grew up with tea eggs, it’s one of my favourite tea-time snacks during my primary school years. It is commonly made with Chinese black tea like Pu-er. Oolong tea has a lighter flavour, which doesn’t overpower other characters on the plate.
Christy had Crispy Skin Barramundi with pesto tossed roasted vegetables, garlic yogurt and chickpea smash. You can hear that satisfying cracking sound when you cut the fish, and surprisingly, the fish was very moist and soft. For drink, I ordered a Purple Soda with elderflower, butterfly pea, rosemary and lemon. Rosemary brings out the freshness of the drink, and look at that purple colour, it’s soooo picture-perfect❤️

On the brunch date with Larry, I ordered Southside Bistro’s signature dish – soft shell crab bao sliders. These steam leaf buns sandwich is soft, and golden-brown fried crab is slathered with Thai style salad, spiced coconut sauce, yet the crunchiness remains. Larry had homemade potato & parmesan gnocchi. The almond flakes added an extra layer of slight crunchiness in your mouth. That soft, pillowy gnocchi with a generous cheesy sauce has definitely satisfied his needs of carbs for the day.

Revisit?
Yes, it is a cafe that I would gladly visit again because of its exciting menu and vivid flavours. It is a decent choice for the neighbourhood.😊
